Chapter 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
In the Philippines, most mothers strive to do everything for their children. One of the musts is studying. Parents all around do everything to put their children to school. Here in the country, having high grades is something that matters to the parents. Studying is the most efficient way to learn something, but in studying there are what you call study habits.

Study Habits are the behavior used when preparing for an academic examination. Every student has his/her own way of studying his/her lessons. It may be good or bad, it usually depends. Each student has a study habit because it would make the learning of the lesson more convenient for their lifestyle. With the study habits it can result to a good or bad grade.

A grade is the primary indicator of a student’s learning. Every student has a choice of what kind of study habit will be used. The extent of a student’s learning can be determined by the grade to see that the studying was effective. If the student has a high grade it indicates that the student is learning, if the student has a low grade that indicates a lesser learning. However, many experiences have shown that there are several factors that affect that would account for the grades. Looking at only one factor will not be enough to predict the grades.

There are a number of factors that can affect the outcome of the grades – gender, IQ, number of siblings, social status, and home environment. The factors can either physical or emotional that can affect the student’s studying in a big way.

My group and I thought of our study because we have looked at our classmates grades through the quarters and we have seen that some grades had significant differences with each other. We want to research on what study habit most student use and some of the other study habits that the other students use. We also want to see what factors are affecting them when performing the study habit. We want to test all these factors for us to get a conclusion by surveying the junior high school students of Marymount Academy.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
The literature in this chapter shows an explanation about some studies that support this study. The review deals with the study habits that affect their academic performance. The chief purposes of study are: to acquire knowledge and habits which will be useful in meeting new situations, interpreting ideas, making judgments creating new ideas and to perfect skills.

Foreign:
According to the research “A Study of the Relationship between Study Habits and Academic Achievement of Students: A case of Spicer Higher Secondary School, India” of E.Siahi and J.Maiyo’s (2015), their observation is there is a high relationship between study habits and academic performance that the good study habits corresponds to an increase in academic achievement while a decrease of good study habits leads to low academic achievement.

The study of Osa-Edoh and Alutu (2012), “A Survey of Students Study Habits in Selected Secondary Schools: Implication for Counselling” which examined the usefulness of developing in the students study habit, as a means of enhancing their academic performance, revealed a high relationship between study habits and students’ academic performance. This suggests that it is only when students develop proper study habits that their academic performance can be improved.

Fazal, S. et.al (2012) identified various study skills used by learners and ascertain which study skills is more related to academic achievement. Results of the study indicate that significant relationship of time-management skills, reading and note-taking skills with academic achievement. Students with higher academic achievement used a wide range of study skills as compared to students with lower academic achievement.

Because of the importance of study habits on academic performance, some researchers have proposed strategies that will help students develop effective study habits. Like the study of Demir et al. (2012), which examined the effect of development of efficient studying skills curriculum on academic achievements and studying skills of learners, found that students can acquire efficient studying skills by means of curriculum for developing efficient studying skills. The students were able to organize the study environment and use specific methods effectively, such as efficient reading, listening lectures, note-taking, efficient writing and doing homework. It further revealed that those students where the curriculum was implemented have increased academic achievement as compared to the group of students on which the curriculum was not implemented.

Therefore, successful achievement in any form of academic activity is based upon study, interpretation and application. Everyone has different study habits. All often, students perform poorly in school simply because they lack good study habits. In many cases, students do not know where to begin. Those students in high school who succeed especially well usually follow a study technique that has been worked out and developed by them. Some good habits that lead to academic achievement are:
1. Attending classes regularly
2. Taking down notes during teaching
3. Concentrating on study
4. Studying with aim of getting meaning not cramming
5. Preparing a time table
6. Following a time table
7. Having proper rest periods
8. Facing the problems regarding home environment and planning.

9. Facing the challenges posed by school environment
10. Keeping daily survey of work done
The literatures given point out that study habits can influence the academic performance of a student.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
There is a high relationship between study habits and academic performance. That the good study habits corresponds to an increase in academic achievement while an increase of bad study habits leads to low academic achievement. The usefulness of developing the students’ studying ways is a means of enhancing their academic performance. This has revealed that there is a big connection between study habits and students’ academic performance. There are various study skills that student use to improve their academics such as, time management skill, reading and note-taking skills. Student that have higher academic performance have a wider range of studying skill compared to those with low academic performance.

The importance of study habits on academic performance, some researchers have proposed strategies that will help students develop effective study habits. The students were able to organize the study environment and use specific methods effectively, such as reading books, listening to their lectures, note-taking and doing homework.

Therefore, successful academic performances from students are based upon how the student applied the study habit. Everyone has different study habits. All often, students perform poorly in school simply because they lack good study habits. Those who succeed usually follow a technique that has helped them and improved their performance.

The figure shows an IPO paradigm, it is a widely used approach in analysis for describing the structure of an information processing program or other process. The input is our dependent variable. This is the information we need for our process which is survey and analysis. Once we have done the processes we may see our output or the result of our research.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study intended to find out the factors affecting the study habits of the students.
It also aimed to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of age?
2. What are the effects of the study habits in academics to the Junior High School students?
3. What are the problems occurred in study habits to the Junior High School students?
4. What are the recommendations/suggestions for the academic effects in study habits to the Junior High School students?
ASSUMPTION
The study habits do not have any academic effects to the Junior High School students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
STUDENTS: This research may help the students understand the importance and significance of having study habits. This may also give them the idea of how their habits affect their academic performance for example in exams quizzes and etc. This could benefit many students because they would know how it can affect their education and their future.

PARENTS: The parents are concern about their child’s performance in school. They want to know if their child can pass or fail the school year. This study can help the parents know how their son/daughter performance in class. They would know how their child may affect them in his/her habits of studying. This research may help parents be informed how will they approach there child about it.

TEACHERS: Teachers may make students study more because teachers affect students in how they study since professors and teachers grade students on how they perform in class participation (recitations, quizzes, and exams). They make students be more responsible in studying and having unique study habits that may help them answer questions that their teachers are giving them. This research may know how teachers can limit their knowledge and give there student time to learn in class. This may help them be informed how students have a hard time in studying things and how they could help them.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION
This study was conducted to see how different students in Marymount Academy, have different kinds and unique ways of studying and how it affects their daily education.
General purpose – this study tells how study habits can affect the students’ academic performance
Population – Junior High School students
Locale – Marymount Academy of Parañaque City
Period of the study – School year 2016 – 2017
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Account- a report or description of an event or experience.Achievement- a thing done successfully, typically by effort, courage, or skill.Acquire- achieve (a reputation) because of one’s behavior or activities.

Aimed- past tense of “aim”; have the intention of achieving.

Application- the action of putting something into operation.Benefit- an advantage or profit gained from something.

Chief- most important
Conclusion- a judgment or decision reached by reasoning.

Conducive- making a certain situation or outcome likely or possible.

Convenient- fitting in well with a person’s needs, activities, and plans.

Cram- study intensively over a short period just before an examination.Curriculum- the subjects comprising a course of study in a school or college.Determined- having made a firm decision and being resolved not to change it.

Efficient- achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense.

Enhance- intensify, increase, or further improve the quality, value, or extent of.

Extent- the amount to which something is or is believed to be the case.

Factor- a circumstance, fact, or influence that contributes to a result or outcome.Financial constraints- is a lack of money; when you act under constraint, you are forced to do something

Lifestyle- the way in which a person or group lives.

Literature- written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit
Logically- describes something that comes from clear reasoning.

Method/s- a form of procedure for accomplishing or approaching something, especially a systematic or established one.

Outcome- the way a thing turns out; a consequence.

Philippines- is a sovereign island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean.

Predict- say or estimate that (a specified thing) will happen in the future or will be a consequence of something.

Primary- of chief importance; principal
Rationally- meaning reasonable or logical; based on logic.

Secondary school- often referred to as a high school or a senior high school.

Significant- sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention; noteworthy.Specific- clearly defined or identified.

Stipulate- demand or specify (a requirement), typically as part of a bargain or agreement.

Strive- make great efforts to achieve or obtain something.

Study Habit- behaviors used when preparing for tests or learning academic material.

Surveying- gerund or present participle of “survey”
Time allocation- is the allotment of time that has been used within different activities and specific exercises.

Time management- the ability to use one’s time effectively or productively, especially at work.Unfavorable- expressing or showing a lack of approval or support.

Various- different from one another; of different kinds or sorts.Chapter 2: METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
The type of research design that was given to us was qualitative expository research design. Qualitative means pertaining to or concerned with quality or qualities while expository means of the nature of exposition; exposition; serving to expound, set forth, or explain. When qualitative and expository unites, the meaning begins with assumptions, a worldview, the possible use of a theoretical lens, and the study of research problems inquiring into the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem.

To study this problem, qualitative researchers use an emerging qualitative approach to inquiry, the collection of data in a natural setting sensitive the people and places under study, and data analysis that is inductive and establishes patterns or themes. The final written report or presentation includes the voices of participants, the reflexivity of the researcher, and the complex description and interpretation of the problem and it extends the literature or signals a call for action.

The study will use the qualitative expository design in its attempt to determine, describe and analyze relationships between time management, learning skills, and study skills and the dependent variable which is the study habits. It tries to find out if the independent variables significantly influence the dependent variable.

POPULATION AND SAMPLING
The researchers are going to conduct this study in Marymount Academy located on J. Villaroman St., Classic Homes Village, BF Homes Paranaque City. The researchers chose Marymount Academy as the main setting of their study because this is the academy where the researchers study.
In the background of Marymount Academy, it was established in 1986 and it was called Marymount School. It was owned before by Ms. Denise Limon. It was reborn on July 24, 2014 and is now called Marymount Academy. It is divided into two buildings, the Mary building and Jesus building. The owner of the academy as of now is Sir Gus Tambunting and Ms. Joy Myra Tambunting.

The sampling method that will be used by the researchers in distributing their surveys is Random Sampling. This method is the basic sampling technique where we select a group of subjects for study from a larger group each individual is chosen entirely by chance and each member of the population has an equal chance of being included in the sample.

The researches distributed surveys to the respondent, 40 students were chosen using random sampling. The respondents consist of 10 Grade 7 students, 10 Grade 8 students, 10 Grade 9 students, and 10 Grade 10 students. The data that was gathered from them will be treated with utmost confidentiality.

The researchers chose this method to let the Marymount Academy Junior High School have a chance to give their opinions and insights about the study of the researchers.
RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY
The respondents of this study are the Junior High School Students of Marymount Academy. They are the ones who are qualified to answer the problems posed in the present study because they are knowledgeable enough and is a Junior High School student which are the qualifications for them to be our respondents. Once they answer the questionnaire that the researchers will give them, they will be able to supply the information needed by the researchers in their analysis.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
To determine the academic effects of study habits we will be conducting a survey. The researchers created a questionnaire based on their learning guided by the previous conducted findings by other researchers.

The survey provided by the researchers for the respondents in Marymount Academy has 3 parts: (1) the demographics, it is the description of a particular respondent, this contains the name, grade and section, age, and gender. (2a) the multiple choice questionnaire, it is form of an objective assessment in which respondents are asked to select an answer out of the choices from a list, this contains questions that can answer our problem number 2 in our statement of the problem. (2b) the evaluation questionnaire, it is a questionnaire of a subject’s merit, worth and significance, using criteria governed by a set of standards, this contains questions that can answer our problem number 3 in our statement of the problem. (3) the recommendation part, it is a suggestion or proposal as to the best course of action, , this contains questions that can answer our problem number 4 in our statement of the problem.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
Data gathering is the collection and measuring information on targeted variables in a systematic fashion, which then enables one to answer relevant questions and evaluate outcomes.
This will enable the researchers to gather true data that will help them prove the content of their study. There are a number of ways to gather data, such as interviews, questionnaire and surveys, observations, focus groups and document and records.
The procedure in gathering data is picture as how the researchers will collect the data and how they will analyze their gathered data. It is vital that the researchers gather the data for them to get rich and pure results.
The researchers are allowed to conduct the survey at Marymount Academy. They will be handing out the survey through Messenger or they will hand it out personally in school. They will gather the data by collecting it from the following respondents or gather it from Messenger.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA
The researchers came up with an analysis for each group to determine the academic effects of study habits among Junior High School students of Marymount Academy. The profile of the respondents only included the age, class section, gender, and the name, which is confidential. Then the weighted mean scores for each group were determined.
