When looking at the Ancient Mariner’s story, the spiritual and material worlds are in disarray once the sailors pass the equator. The sailors lose the sense of direction because of the natural world and the hurricane pushes them into a frozen world during the rest of the poem. The sailors then face the Albatross and at first, the sailors thought it was it was a soul that God sent to them. The Ancient Mariner knew that the Albatross was not a soul sent by God and started shooting at it to show his fellow sailors that it was indeed not a soul. Because the Albatross is now shackled to the spiritual world the Ancient Mariner’s now has to face punishment by the spiritual world.
